WASHINGTON, D.C. (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- The National Transportation Safety Board released its final report on the El Faro investigation Wednesday, more than two years after the cargo ship sank northeast of the Bahamas.
The NTSB met back in December of 2017 to determine the probable cause of the sinking, at which point it also released its findings and made safety recommendations.
El Faro's captain and owner were both cited in the sinking, which was the worst maritime disaster involving a U.S.-based ship in more than 30 years. All 33 on board died, including four from Maine, Captain Michael Davidson, Michael Holland, Dylan Meklin and Danielle Randolph.
The NTSB investigation resulted in 80 findings and 53 recommendations. The main probable causes for the ship's sinking were the captain's insufficient actions and the ship's owners lack of oversight and safety management practices.
