(NEWS CENTER Maine) -- The Maine Warden Service is hiring. Eighteen applicants have submitted applications to become a part-time deputy warden for the summer months. Maine Warden Service is looked for applicants with prior boating experience, although it is not required.
“There’s really no better experience for someone who is looking to become a full-time game warden,” said Cpl. John MacDonald. He mentioned if you hunt or fish in Maine, there is a chance you have been around boats before, which includes canoes and other watercraft.
The deputy warden position is considered a law enforcement position. It includes OUI detection, crash investigation, but if it is a serious crash more than likely a full-time game warden is going to be the primary investigator. This position does not require that you go to the Maine Criminal Justice Academy, but you do have to pass a written ‘Alert test” and physical fitness test.
The physical fitness test consists of a run, push-ups and sit-ups. The length of the run, the amount of push-ups and sit-ups are all determined by your age bracket. But, not everyone gets through it. MacDonald says close to 50% of the people don’t pass even though they had the "answers" ahead of time.
“We often say you get to the end of the driveway every morning and quite often it will be your choice everyday to go left or right," said MacDonald during a ride-along with NEWS CENTER Maine. "This is your office, in this truck you have high-speed internet, access to all-terrain vehicles and boats and things to do your work with, if you like the outdoors and you like law enforcement
The physical fitness and ‘Alert tests” are good for any law enforcement job in the state. The fitness test is good for a year and the comprehension test is good for life.
