SEDONA, Arizona — A 79-year-old man from Maine has died after falling approximately 30 feet from a trail in Arizona while on a hike.
Yavapai County sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a 79-year-old man from North Berwick, Maine who fell while hiking on Pyramid Trail in Sedona, Arizona just before 1 p.m. on Saturday, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.
The man had reportedly slipped and fell approximately 30-35 feet from the trail and down a steep embankment while hiking with his wife. He sustained fatal injuries from the fall and hit his head multiple times, the sheriff's office stated. The Sedona Fire Department was already at the scene by the time sheriff's deputies arrived.
He was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene and his death was ruled accidental. The man's name has not been released.
The sheriff's office said multiple people witnessed the incident and saw the man struggling on the hike. Witnesses "asked if he needed help."
"He told passers-by that he was fine but minutes later slipped," the release stated.
A spokesperson from the sheriff's office told NEWS CENTER Maine the man's wife was uninjured and reported his fall.
"The family has not notified the Sheriff’s Office of their plans for the body upon release from the Medical Examiner’s Office," the spokesperson added.
Pyramid Trail is a moderate 2.2-mile loop trail located in the Coconino National Forest, according to the AllTrails website. Rain and snow fell in the Sedona area last week, the spokesperson said.
