NEWS CENTER legend Fred Nutter passes away at age 82

(NEWS CENTER) -- A NEWS CENTER legend has passed away. Our former colleague and friend Fred Nutter was 82 years old.

Fred was born in Sanford in 1933, the son of Betty and Arthur Nutter. After serving his country in the Navy, Fred returned home to begin has broadcasting career, working weekends at WSME Radio. The allure of the big city eventually brought Fred to WPOR in Portland before eventually coming to WCSH radio to deliver the news in 1965. Fred quickly switched over to television and his reporting career blossomed while on his beat at Portland City Hall. He then became WCSH’s State House correspondent, covering the ins and outs of the political world in Augusta. By 1976, Fred was named news director at WCSH, a position he held until he transitioned into the role that Mainers most remember him as, our editorial director. Fred was the voice of the WCSH editorial board and would inform viewers of the station’s position on a wide variety of topics…from bills being debated in the legislature to whether too much snow had fallen during a particularly harsh winter. Fred would end his editorials with his signature line, “That’s our opinion, we welcome yours.”

Fred is survived by his three children, nine grandchildren, and his wife of 55 years, Joan. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Nutter family. Fred was an extremely well-respected and beloved member of the NEWS CENTER family. He will be missed.
