NEWBURGH, Maine — A Newburgh man was killed Sunday afternoon after a tree fell on him while he was cutting it down.
Shortly after noon Sunday, Penobscot County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a tree on top of a man in the woods on Western Avenue, the sheriff's office said in a news release.
When emergency personnel arrived at the scene, they discovered the man behind the home dead underneath the tree, the release stated.
Deputies said the initial investigation revealed the 79-year-old man was reportedly using his chainsaw alone to cut down trees when a tree fell and hit him.
"This appears to be a private accidental forestry incident," the release said.
Fire departments from Carmel and Newburgh, as well as Northern Light Ambulance, assisted the sheriff's office in this incident.
No additional details were released.
