New Maine State Prison warden announced

Nathan Thayer will assume the role beginning May 20.

AUGUSTA, Maine — A new warden has been selected for the Maine State Prison.

The Maine Department of Corrections (MDOC) on Friday announced that Nathan Thayer will assume the role following a lengthy search and selection process, the MDOC said in a release.

Thayer began his career in corrections at the Maine Correctional Center in 2006 where he served in several leadership positions including director of security, according to the release.

"For the past three years, Thayer has served as the Jail Administrator for York County Jail," the MDOC said. "During his tenure with York County, Thayer implemented the jail’s Medication Assisted Treatment Program and expanded the jail’s programming and treatment services."

"We are extremely excited to have Mr. Thayer return to our team as the new warden at Maine State Prison," Commissioner Randall Liberty said in the Friday release. "His demonstrated record of leadership and experience make me confident that he’ll be a great fit for the position."

Thayer was awarded Maine Sheriff's Association Manager of the Year in 2022 and is also a veteran who served in the U.S. Army during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

He will assume the role of warden at the Maine State Prison beginning May 20.
