Neighbor helps woman get away from rabid fox

When a rabid fox attacked and bit Barbara Senecal on her legs and hands, it was a neighbor who came to her rescue.

BRUNSWICK (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- There have been two rabid animal attacks in Brunswick in four days. The first was a rabid skunk that attacked a dog and the second was a rabid fox that attacked Barbara Senecal.

Senecal was walking to her mailbox to get the Sunday newspaper when she noticed a fox on the side of the road. She expected it to run away, but instead it ran after her.

"Didn't think he would be interested at all, the thought didn't even go through my mind before he pounced on me," said Senecal.

The fox bit the 72-year-old on her legs and right arm. She was able to pin the fox to the ground, while she screamed for help. Phillip Allred new was something was wrong when he heard the screams coming from the road.

"Opened up my door when I let my dog out and all I heard was, somebody please, somebody help me," said Allred.

Allred was able to pin the fox down while Senecal ran home to call 911. According to the Brunswick animal control officer, Heidi Nelson, the fox was euthanized and tested positive for rabies.

Barbara Senecal points out where she spotted the rabid fox.

Senecal will have the last of four rabies vaccine shots on Sunday. She's thankful her injuries aren't worse because of the quick response of her neighbor and plans on spending the rest of her walks to the mailbox armed and ready with a stick.

"I don't know what I would have done without him," said Senecal.
