BIDDEFORD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- An auction house in Biddeford is hoping to set records with a collection of rare baseball cards.
has set a couple of records in the past few year years for selling rare baseball cards, with one selling as high as $92 thousand.
Three brothers in Portland inherited a collection of T206 cards, or tobacco cards from their grandfather. He started smoking as a teenager in the early 1900s, and every time he opened a pack of cigarettes he saved the baseball card that came with it. He collected more than 1,400 cards over the years. Auction house owner Floyd Hartford calls the find a treasure trove.
"Most guys, they have ten or fifteen or twenty," Hartford said. "Some of them are ripped or whatever, but to have this many in this condition and the quality is just very rare."
Saco River Auction Company has not set an exact date to auction off the cards, but Hartford says it will likely happen in January.
