Monster truck crash at Topsham Fairgrounds leaves several spectators injured

A monster truck went over a jump and hit an aerial utility wire that was across the race track. The wire got stuck on the truck, pulling down several utility poles.

TOPSHAM, Maine — Several people were injured Saturday after a crash involving a monster truck at the Topsham Fairgrounds.

Shortly before 2 p.m., officials received a report about a crash at the fairgrounds, the Topsham Police Department said in a release.

The fairgrounds was hosting a monster truck show at the dirt horse racing track when the incident happened.

According to police, during the event a monster truck dubbed the Crushstation went over a jump and struck an aerial utility wire that was across the race track. The wire became stuck on the truck and pulled several utility poles down. Police said at least one of the fell poles was near the spectator viewing area.

Several spectators were injured, two of which were taken to area hospitals. Those not taken to the hospital were treated on the scene by Topsham and Brunswick fire officials. The driver of the truck was not injured.

In a June 6 update, Topsham Police Chief Marc Hagan said no criminal charges would be issued in connection with the incident.

“I’m still a little bit shaken up,” Mike Hersom, who was watching with his 3-year-old son and narrowly avoided the falling transformer, told the Associated Press.

He said he watched in disbelief for a moment before jumping to action to move away; he saw just how close the transformer came to him and his son when he watched a video. “When I watched the video, it was like, ‘Holy smokes. That’s crazy,'" he said Sunday.

Following the incident, the power was shut off throughout most of Topsham at the request of town fire officials to allow spectators to be safely treated and evacuated from the scene. Police said power was restored at about 4:30 p.m.

Police are continuing to investigate this incident. Witnesses with more information or video footage of the crash are encouraged to contact Officer Mathew Bowers at 207-725-4337 or mbowers@topshammaine.com.
