ALFRED, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A female student involved in a fight at Massabesic High School is facing an assault charge.
Earlier this month, police say the 16 year old female student assaulted another 16 year old student on school grounds. The attack was caught on video and released online.

Law enforcement and school officials are hoping the Massabesic community can learn from what happened and put the incident behind them.

York County Sheriff William King said, " I don't want this to define that student. I want this to be a blip. I want them to get the proper counseling and get back on the correct path."

RSU 57 Superintendent John Davis sent a letter to the Massabesic community to address the issue and explain how this altercation shines a negative light on the district. Davis called the entire situation "truly concerning."

Davis went on to say this incident went viral for three reasons, it was videotaped, it was an unusual attack and the most disturbing thing is that it didn't seem like students walking by seemed to care about what was happening.

King agreed, "I think that is a little troubling that someone didn't come to the girl's aid."

The attacker was summonsed and is expected to make her first court appearance in June. She has has also been placed in a "student integration retention program" which provides counseling for these types of cases.

Her name has not been released.

The 16-year-old victim was injured in the fight.
