PHIPPSBURG, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- After missing for several hours, Sagadahoc County deputies and K9 units found a missing 17-year-old Massachusetts boy Tuesday evening.
The boy was last seen in the area of Hermit Island Campground in Phippsburg around 2:30 p.m. Sagadahoc Sheriff's Office received a report of him missing around 6:30 p.m. He was a member of a school group staying on the island for a marine biology program.
Sagadahoc County deputies and Phippsburg Fire Department personnel arrived on scene and started searching the immediate area. At 8:49 p.m. a Sheriff's deputy and a canine, Brix, found the boy located several hundred yards away from his campsite. Phippsburg Fire EMS checked him and then transported him to Mid Coast Hosptial in Brunswick.
"We are very fortunate that the K-9 unit was able to locate the young man. With cooling temperatures his safety would have become an issue," said Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry.
Also assisting in the search was the Maine Warden Service, Maine Marine Patrol and the Phippsburg Police Department.
