DENMARK, Maine — A man has died despite lifesaving efforts after he suffered an apparent medical event on Moose Pond Sunday.
At approximately 4:15 p.m., Oxford County and Cumberland County sheriff's deputies, local police, and EMS services responded to a witnessed medical emergency in the water on Moose Pond near Lochmont Drive in Denmark, according to a news release from the Oxford County Sheriff's Office.
An 80-year-old man was reported to have jumped off a boat and into the water. Upon surfacing, he was struggling and asked bystanders for help, the sheriff's office stated.
The man was not breathing by the time help reached him, and CPR efforts commenced when he was pulled from the water. Lifesaving measures continued as the man was brought by boat to a boat launch along the causeway on Route 302 in Bridgton, according to the release.
The man reportedly died at the scene. After an investigation, "the incident was determined to be a medical event."
The man's identity is being withheld pending family notifications.
"The Sheriff’s Office would like to recognize the efforts of all bystanders who came to this man’s aid and tried diligently to save his life," the Oxford County Sheriff's Office said in the release.
