Maine State Police investigate child death on Vinalhaven

Further testing is required before the child's cause and manner of death can be determined following an autopsy Thursday, officials said.

VINALHAVEN, Maine — Maine State Police are continuing to investigate a child death on Vinalhaven that happened Wednesday morning.

First responders were called to a home on the island after the child's parents called 911 and reported their son was unresponsive just before 11 a.m., according to a news release from Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss.

Life-saving efforts were performed, and the child was brought to Islands Community Medical Services, Moss said. Soon after, the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit Central was notified the child had died.

The child was reportedly brought to the chief medical examiner's office in Augusta and an autopsy was performed Thursday. Moss said further testing is required before his cause and manner of death can be determined.

The child's parents are cooperating with the investigation, Moss said.

Vinalhaven is an island located in the center of Penobscot Bay with a population of just over 1,100 year-round residents.
