Maine Red Cross sending help to Houston flooding victims

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Two volunteers from the Red Cross here in Maine are traveling to Houston Wednesday morning to assist in the recovery efforts from devastating floods.

Shaun Kieran of South Portland and Bob Melaragno of Auburn are being deployed with additional disaster workers and relief supplies to make sure people in Houston get the help they need.

Hundreds of families are counting on the Red Cross after floodwaters chased them from their homes.

Currently, Red Cross workers have opened 13 shelters around Houston, more than 430 people spent the night at those shelters on Monday.

Volunteers are needed to help distribute food and water, clean-up supplies, hygiene kits and more. This is the kind of work Bob and Shaun will be doing once they arrive.

On average, it costs the Red Cross just over $1,650 to deploy a volunteer on an 11-day trip. If you're interested in donating or signing up to help, click here for more information.
