Maine doctor dies after being hit by truck while bicycling

Central Maine Doctor

WINDSOR, Maine (AP) - Authorities say a Maine physician has died from injuries she sustained after she was struck by a pickup truck while bicycling near her home.

Kennebec County Sheriff Ryan Reardon told The Kennebec Journal (http://bit.ly/2dUZWza ) Saturday that the incident happened last Monday in Windsor.

Reardon says the driver told investigators he was driving southbound and the sun was in his eyes when he stopped because he heard a noise. He then saw a bicycle on the shoulder and a woman in a ditch.

Reardon says Dr. Carol Eckert was hospitalized with several head injuries and fractures.

Authorities say Eckert turned 63 on Thursday, the day she died.

Reardon says there's no indication that alcohol or speed was involved. No citations have been issued but the investigation remains open.
