Mackworth Island hit hard by storm, forcing school to close summer programs

Public hiking trails on the Mackworth Island are closed until Friday. School summer programs are expected to return July 17th.

FALMOUTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- A fast-moving storm snapped utility poles and downed powerlines on the only road into Mackworth Island earlier this week. Trees blocked streets and ripped wires from the buildings at the Maine Educational Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and the Governor Baxter School for the Deaf.

The school's playground had trees fall into fences, but missed hitting equipment. Summer programs were canceled after its first day on Tuesday.

"We have to make sure our fire alert system is in place and working before we can have staff and students return," says Traci Drake, the Director of Operations at MECDHH.

Public hiking trails on the island are closed until Friday. School summer programs are expected to return July 17th.
