Limington man charged with murder enters plea of not guilty

A man from Limington accused of killing his neighbor with a machete back in June was in court for his arraignment Tuesday.

ALFRED, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — A man from Limington accused of killing his neighbor with a machete back in June was in court for his arraignment Tuesday.

In a brief proceeding that lasted about a minute, Bruce Akers attorneys entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf.

Court documents describe a violent attack that led to the death of his neighbor Douglas Flint. Flint had numerous cuts and injuries to his head and neck and had nearly been decapitated.

Akers had called authorities to report Flint had stolen a six-pack of beer from him. When Flint was reported missing the next day, detectives questioned Akers. According to the police affidavit, when Akers was asked if Flint was still alive he shook his head and said no. Police recovered a machete from Aker’s camper.

Investigators said Akers had a long-running dispute with Flint. Flint’s body was discovered on Aker’s property, covered up by rotting deer carcasses.

Akers attorney said he has met with his client a few times and will be looking into all aspects of this case moving forward, including any possible mental health issues.

“He’s got relatively no criminal record, he was in the military," said attorney Paul Aranson. "If you’ve met him, he’s very personable. So this is a highly unusual circumstance he finds himself in."

The judge ordered that Akers continue to be held without bail.
