MAINE, USA — Towns and cities across the state are coming together to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community during Pride month, which is this June.
What is Pride?
Pride is a celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals. It honors the history of the LGBTQ+ community.
According to the Library of Congress, the first Pride march was held June 28, 1970, one year after the Stonewall Uprising, which was a "tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States."
To celebrate Pride this year, many Maine communities are holding parades, events, and celebrations throughout the state.
Maine's LGBTQ+ History
Maine has a rich LGBTQ+ history that includes people and communities in every corner of the state. Many have fought, and continue to fight, for the rights of the often-marginalized community.
Learn more about the history by watching NEWS CENTER Maine's special, "Maine Pride."
