LEWISTON, Maine — Lewiston City Administrator Heather Hunter has resigned.
Hunter, who has worked for the city since 1989 serving in several finance positions, was hired as city administrator in 2021.
The City Council on Friday voted to name Deputy City Administrator Brian O'Malley acting administrator while it conducts a search for a replacement.
"The City Council has agreed, with reluctance, to accept the resignation of Administrator Hunter," the council said in a statement. "We appreciate her years of service to the city and wish her the best."
NEWS CENTER Maine has requested a copy of Hunter's resignation letter.
After the city's mass shooting in October, Hunter helped the city establish a memorial and events fund.
“The people of Lewiston are resilient, and we will make sure we do this right by those directly impacted by this horrific event by creating a meaningful, purposeful memorial and unifying community events," she said earlier this month, according to Spectrum News.
Several Lewiston officials have criticized Hunter in recent months over her leadership style and the resignation of several department heads, according to the Sun Journal.
