AUBURN, Maine — The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has identified the remains of a man killed earlier this month in a fire at a home in Auburn. The fire was connected to a deadly standoff with police and multiple other fires.
He has been identified as Brian Woodbury, 43, according to the medical examiner's office. Woodbury's remains were discovered in the debris of a home on Russell Avenue that caught fire on June 15.
Several other homes caught fire that night amid an armed standoff with police, where 43-year-old Leein Hinkley was shot and killed after law enforcement said he shot at them multiple times.
Emergency dispatchers received a call shortly before 1 a.m. from a woman who was reporting that her significant other was in a fight with an armed individual who was attempting to break into their home. Hinkley was identified as the armed suspect.
Hinkley had been released on bail just days before the incident, accused of domestic violence, and the decision drew much criticism from Gov. Janet Mills and Maine police unions. Hinkley had a lengthy criminal history, including charges related to stabbing his girlfriend and another person.
