The identity of a motorcyclist fatally injured in a crash in Auburn on Friday has been released.

Police said in an update Saturday night Auburn first responders were called to South Main Street at the intersection of Witham Road on Friday around 5:30 p.m. for a serious crash involving a motorcycle and a car.

Initial investigation revealed a 2004 Volkswagen Beetle driven by a 15-year-old girl with her learner's permit struck a 2010 Kawasaki motorcycle while attempting to turn onto South Main Street from Witham Road, according to a release. The teen was accompanied by her mother, police said.

The teenager was reportedly having trouble operating the manual transmission of the Volkswagen while trying to turn onto South Main Street from Witham Road, police said. The motorcyclist swerved, attempting to avoid hitting the car, but struck the car's driver's side.

The driver of the motorcycle was identified as 40-year-old Jessica Carter of Lewiston. Police said Carter was wearing a helmet but suffered fatal injuries. Witnesses at the scene tried to provide medical care to the motorcyclist, but she did not survive, according to police.

Both the teenager and her mother were not seriously injured, police said.

The two roads were closed for several hours while officials reconstructed the crash.

The Auburn Police Department is investigating the crash.
