Man reported 'actively firing' gun in Lewiston found dead in woods, police say

The Lewiston Police Department said several reports were received of an armed subject in the area of Essex Street late Saturday night.

LEWISTON, Maine — A man who was reportedly seen "actively firing" a gun in Lewiston late Saturday night was found dead in the woods after allegedly shooting at police and fleeing. 

The Lewiston Police Department said on social media several reports were received about a male subject "actively firing" a gun in the area of Essex Street around 11:30 p.m. 

Upon being quickly located by police, the man reportedly fired his gun at officers and fled into the woods. Police said officers did not return fire. 

A perimeter was established by Lewiston police, with help from the Auburn Police Department, Lisbon Police Department, Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office, and Maine State Police. The Maine State Police Tactical Team and Crisis Negotiators also responded. 

A NEWS CENTER Maine crew who was at the scene noted road closures on Lincoln Street from Locust Street to South Avenue and Essex Street southwest of Lisbon Street. 

At approximately 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, law enforcement found the man dead in the woods. Police said he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and a handgun was recovered with his body. 

Police identified the man as 45-year-old Nathan Savage of Auburn. His body was brought to the chief medical examiner's office, according to police. 

All roads that were closed during the search have since reopened, according to the NEWS CENTER Maine crew at the scene.
