Officials investigate 'suspicious object' at Lewiston recycling center

The object was determined to be a "disarmed artillery shell," according to police.

LEWISTON, Maine — An investigation was prompted Friday afternoon after a "suspicious object" was discovered at a Lewiston recycling center.

Lewiston police responded to 38 Alfred Plourde Pkwy. for a reported "piece of unexploded ordinance" found on a conveyor belt at the ReSource Waste Services recycling facility, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss.

At the time of the incident, everyone in the area was evacuated, the Lewiston Police Department said on Facebook around 3 p.m.

The Maine State Police Bomb Squad responded to the scene to assist in investigating.

The item was identified as a disarmed 90MM-M19 artillery round that "appeared to have been modified as it was not original production condition."

Moss said the artillery round did not contain any explosive or hazardous material and was taken to be disposed of at a later time.

River Road was closed to traffic for a period of time for investigation but has since reopened.
