'Everyone just started working': LifeFlight of Maine speaks out after Lewiston tragedy

LifeFlight of Maine is taking steps to properly ensure staff members are able to fully recuperate, especially mentally.

LEWISTON, Maine — After a swift response to the mass shooting tragedy in Lewiston, LifeFlight of Maine is taking steps to properly ensure staff members are able to fully recuperate, especially mentally.

"We try to provide immediate resources through immediate debriefs with our crews. Then from a longer-term perspective making sure they have a whole myriad of resources we can surround them with, surround our teams with to make sure they are supported," LifeFlight CEO Joe Kellner said.

LifeFlight of Maine was initially alerted to the situation in Lewiston after their crews at Central Maine Medical Center heard the announcement that a mass shooting had taken place and to prepare for what the hospital was sure to face.

"With our crews in particular, everyone just started working," Kellner said.

Additional LifeFlight crews repositioned themselves from Sanford and Bangor to further assist in Greater Lewiston. The plane in Bangor brought in blood supplies according to LifeFlight's social media

Kellner told NEWS CENTER Maine he is not surprised by his crew's efficient actions responding to the tragedy, because it unfortunately is what they prepare for.

"You know, we just at this point want people to take care of themselves, and obviously our thoughts continue to be with the victims, their families, their loved ones," Kellner said.

LifeFlight of Maine issued the following statement:

"We remain committed to providing the best possible care and the fastest possible transport when and where it is needed. Maine is a special place, and our hearts break for everyone in our community affected by this act of violence. The entire LifeFlight of Maine team stands with the community of Lewiston and with the people of Maine today and every day."
