Lewiston community releases details for event marking one year since tragedy

In addition to the 18 people who lost their lives, the commemoration event will also honor those who responded and who continue to support individuals impacted.

LEWISTON, Maine — Organizers in Lewiston have released details about the commemoration event planned to mark one year since tragedy struck the community.

Hosted by the One Lewiston Resilience Fund Committee, in partnership with the city of Lewiston, Maine Resilience Center, and the LA Metro Chamber of Commerce, the Oct. 25 Commemoration Event will honor all who were impacted by mass shooting events that happened that day, the organizers said in a news release on social media.

Eighteen people lost their lives in the shootings at Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant and the Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley.

The commemoration event will also honor those who responded and those who continue to support individuals impacted, according to the release.

The event will feature music, performances, and remarks. It will also seek input on the development of a permanent memorial, organizers said.

"Attendees are invited to bring small items to contribute to a vault that will be incorporated into the permanent memorial site," the release stated.

There will also be quiet viewing spaces and therapists available at the event, as well as American Sign Language interpretation.

Additionally, organizers said the event will be live streamed with ASL interpretation and closed captions.

It will take place on Oct. 25 at The Colisee in Lewiston. Doors will open at 5 p.m. and the program will begin at 6 p.m. Accessible parking will be available onsite, and shuttles will be provided to the Southern Gateway Garage.

The event is free and open to everyone.

If you would like to support the creation of a permanent memorial, you can make donations here.
