Auburn vigil honors lives lost in Lewiston mass shooting

Dozens turned out for a night of healing and to remember the 18 who died last week.

AUBURN, Maine — As the community of Lewiston still grieves the loss of 18 lives in a mass shooting last week, the city of Auburn held a vigil Thursday at Festival Plaza to honor the victims.

"I'm hoping that it will soften the hearts a little bit," Auburn City Councilor Leroy Walker said of the vigil. His son, Joseph Walker, was the manager of Schemengees Bar & Grill, where shooter Robert Card killed him and seven others.

The city of Auburn's nighttime streets were filled with song and prayer as vigil attendees took time to pause and remember the 18 lives taken on Oct. 25.

"I want all of them remembered," Councilor Walker told NEWS CENTER Maine.

The vigil was also a large show of love and support as dozens turned out for the event.

"We wanted to honor the victims," attendee Dave Thibaudeau, of Auburn, said.
