Victim in fatal Auburn fire believed to be sole resident of the home, officials say

Firefighting units arrived shortly after 1:30 a.m. and found heavy fire throughout the two-story home, according to the fire department.

AUBURN, Maine — One person has died after a house fire in Auburn early Monday morning. 

It is believed to be Steven Berry, 60, who lived alone at the home, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a press release. The body was taken to the state medical examiner's office to confirm the identity, according to Moss.

Flames broke out shortly after 1:30 a.m. at 790 Washington St., the Auburn Fire Department said in a press release.

Firefighting units arrived and found heavy fire throughout the two-story home, according to the release. The roof had collapsed, and the second floor was compromised, the release stated. 

Officials found the body of a deceased adult. An autopsy will be performed by the state chief medical examiner's office to confirm identity and cause of death. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the state fire marshal's office.

The Lewiston Fire Department assisted the Auburn Fire Department at the scene, with the Mechanic Falls and New Gloucester fire departments providing station coverage. Auburn police, Auburn Public Works, Auburn Water District, Central Maine Power, and Unitil also responded to the scene, according to the release.
