House in Auburn catches fire from lightning strike

No injuries were reported. However, two cats remained unaccounted for as of Monday afternoon.

AUBURN, Maine — A lightning strike caused a house in Auburn to catch fire Sunday, heavily damaging the home.

It happened shortly after 9 p.m. at 16 Russell Ave., the Auburn Fire Department said in a release Monday.

The department was at scene within six minutes and found fire on the exterior of the building, as well as interior rooms on the first and second floors, officials said.

Crews began an aggressive interior fire attack and had it under control within a half-hour, according to the release. Crews remained on scene for several hours to conduct overhaul and extinguish hot spots.

The two-story, wood-framed, single-family home was heavily damaged in the fire, the fire department said.

No injuries were reported, the release stated. However, as of Monday afternoon, officials said two cats remained unaccounted for.

The department confirmed a lightning strike was the cause of the fire.
