Charges expected in Auburn crash that seriously injured one person

Police said a Lewiston woman was brought to the hospital with serious injuries she suffered in the crash, which is under investigation, and charges are expected.

AUBURN, Maine — One person was seriously injured in a crash that closed the northbound lanes of Washington Street in Auburn Tuesday morning.

The crash happened in the area of Ness Oil, which is located at 249 Washington St., the Auburn Police Department said in a social media post.

Auburn police and fire departments responded to the crash just before 6 a.m., according to an update from Auburn police.

An initial investigation revealed 77-year-old Carole Bennett of Lewiston was attempting to cross Washington Street and head northbound in a 2014 Ford Escape when her vehicle entered the path of a 2021 Hyundai Elantra driven by 25-year-old Hedulene Domingos of Lewiston, resulting in the crash.

Bennett's vehicle traveled across the grass median and into the northbound lanes as a result of the crash, police said. She was treated at the scene and brought to a local hospital with "serious injuries."

Police said Domingos was driving with a learner's permit but without the supervision of a licensed driver.

Auburn police are investigating the crash with assistance from Maine State Police. Charges are anticipated, police said.

Northbound traffic was detoured onto Rodman Road via Miami Avenue, and all lanes have since reopened, according to police.
