Boy hit by car while riding scooter in Auburn

Police said the boy failed to stop at a stop sign.

AUBURN, Maine — A 9-year-old boy was taken to Central Maine Medical Center on Saturday after he was hit by a vehicle while he was riding a scooter.

The incident happened shortly before 6 p.m. on Laurel Avenue, Auburn Deputy Police Chief Tim Cougle told NEWS CENTER Maine.

Cougle said an initial investigation showed the boy was riding a scooter on Laurel Avenue when he failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Newbury Street. That's when he a white Dodge Avenger traveling at low speed hit the boy, according to police.

The boy was conscious and alert when first responders got to the scene, Cougle said. He was taken by Auburn Rescue to CMMC for further evaluation.

No charges have been filed in connection with the crash, which remains under investigation, according to police.
