KITTERY (NEWS CENTER Maine) — Republican state lawmakers are firing back against Democrats who urged the Kittery Trading Post to stop selling assault-style rifles.
In an open letter supporting the Maine store, Rep. Heidi Sampson (R-Alfred) wrote:
"These Democratic lawmakers are threatening and harassing an iconic Maine business to push a radical national gun control agenda that Mainers don’t want and don’t need.”

Three Maine Democrats, all from York County, sent their own letter earlier this week asking the Kittery Trading Post to stop selling assault-style rifles like larger stores such as Dick's Sporting Goods and Walmart have done in recent months.
Rep. Dean Rykerson (D-Kittery), Rep. Patricia Hymanson (D-York) and Rep. Lydia Blume (D-York) also asked the Trading Post to raise the purchasing age to buy a gun to 21.
Kittery Trading Post did not respond when residents circulated petitions a few months ago to end the sales of assault rifles. On Thursday, July 5, the store continued to stay silent on the matter and said they have no comment.
Rep. Ron Collins (R-York) said in the Republicans' letter, "...We are ready to defend Maine’s heritage and our valued homegrown businesses such as Kittery Trading Post."
“We are proud of Kittery Trading Post for standing firm against this unprecedented assault on Maine’s sporting traditions and commonsense values of self-reliance and self-defense," said Rep. Sampson.
