FAIRFIELD (NEWS CENTER Maine) — Instead of a beeping alarm, a barking dog drew his owner's attention to the danger of a fire spreading through a home in Fairfield.
By the time Mitch MacArthur woke up to the sound of Sabrina's yelps early Monday morning, the flames were just outside of his bedroom door.
"I mean if it wasn't for the dog, I would've been still sleeping," MacArthur said. "She's definitely a lifesaver. Getting her was the best decision I ever made, right here. We are a team, we're a good team."
MacArthur and Sabrina escaped to safety, but lost their home. Firefighters said it is a total loss. An investigation is underway to pinpoint the cause of the fire.
"I guess it's just a dog's intuition," said Fairfield Fire Chief Duane Bickford. "I suppose it's the breed and intelligence of the dog. They can recognize when something isn't right."
MacArthur grew up in the home. He said he lost everything that he owns, but at least he has a chance to start over with Sabrina by his side.
