CANTON, Maine — A man from Jay has died after a two-vehicle crash in Canton Tuesday afternoon.
At 12:30 p.m., Oxford County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to the area of 641 Canton Point Rd. for a reported two-vehicle crash with injuries, involving a severed utility pole with wires down, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.
An initial investigation revealed a 2015 Toyota RAV 4 was headed west on Canton Point Road when it lost control, crossed the center line, and struck a 2013 Ford Escape traveling in the opposite direction, the sheriff's office said. The Toyota also reportedly struck a Central Maine Power utility pole, breaking it and disrupting power.
The sheriff's office said the driver of the Toyota, identified as 57-year-old Vince Wilder of Jay, died in the crash. A 63-year-old woman from Dixfield, the driver of the Ford, was reportedly brought to Rumford Community Hospital for injuries not considered life-threatening.
Canton Point Road was closed for several hours due to the crash.
A crash reconstructionist with the Oxford County Sheriff's Office is reconstructing the incident.
"The crash remains under investigation. Fire Departments from Canton and Dixfield, along Med-Care Ambulance assisted at the scene," the sheriff's office said. "Crews from Central Maine Power responded to restore power [and] fix the damaged pole."
