PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --
The Maine Irish Heritage Center is celebrating a special new addition.
Dedication ceremonies were held Wednesday evening for the archives of former Maine governor and Congressman Joseph Brennan.
"I hope the archives will stand as a testament that politics can be about hope and justice and peace and that such politics can be successful and that governments can be effective,” said Governor Brennan.
The archives contain oral histories, documents from Brennan's time as governor and in Congress and some artifacts.
Wednesday’s event was hosted by NEWS CENTER’s Pat Callaghan.
Speakers included former Senator George Mitchell, who was appointed by Brennan to fill the unexpired term of Senator Ed Muskie in 1980.
“What we really need are leaders that have the qualities that Joe Brennan had,” said Sen. Mitchell.
