BREWER, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — Hundreds of walkers, runners and riders came out to the Lafayette Family Cancer Center Saturday to raise money for the sixth annual EMMC Champion the Cure Challenge.
The event was sponsored by Maine Savings Federal Credit Union. Since 2010 the Champion the Cure Challenge has raised over $2.2 million for local cancer research patient care.
Todd Hashey rode his bike for 100 miles in memory of his friend, Mike Openshaw. It was a challenge he had to accomplish.
“I was cramping up pretty bad and feeling pretty awful but I said to myself, no matter how bad this hurts, it’s nothing compared to what Mike put up with,” he said.
Just days before the event, Mike lost his battle to cancer. His friends and family came out to show their strength and solidarity.
“You know, he was superman and that’s why we came out to honor him,” said Hashey.
The goal was to raise $650,000. To donate click here.
