JAY, Maine — Police in Jay are investigating after human remains were found in the woods near Elm Street, raising hopes that the discovery may shed new light on the decades-long search for Kimberly Moreau, who went missing 38 years ago.
The remains were found after a tip was given to Richard Moreau, Kimberly’s father. He believes they could be connected to his daughter's disappearance. Kimberly Moreau was last seen in Jay just before midnight on May 9, 1986, according to the Maine State Police. She was reportedly with someone she had met earlier that day and has not been seen since.
"I'm just tired of waiting, but I've been waiting for 38 years," Moreau said. "But I'm also looking at it this way: we now know that it is human, and at least one family is going to get an answer."
Moreau's family has shared that Kimberly had told her sister she was going out with friends and would return at around 11 p.m. Later, someone saw her getting into a late-model white Monte Carlo or Trans Am with a friend and a 25-year-old man. The family previously has said Kimberly's friend was familiar with the man.
A friend also claimed that Kimberly was dropped off early the next morning on Jewell Street, which is just two streets from where the remains were discovered behind a building in the woods Saturday. Residents say the building was once a local bowling alley.
While authorities have yet to confirm the identity of the remains, Richard Moreau is hoping this development may finally bring closure to his family after nearly four decades of searching for answers.
