HERMON, Maine — The Hermon Mountain Ski Area is facing an unexpected setback amid season preparations after their pump house caught fire Tuesday night.
The ski area said in a Facebook post Wednesday that snowmaking was going well and snow was piling up on Tuesday. Around midnight, however, its pump house caught fire.
Hermon and Hampden Fire Departments responded to the scene and quickly put out the blaze, the ski area said, but the pump and motor inside the pump house were complete losses.
The ski area says it is "remaining positive" and is now working with its insurance company and other businesses to get equipment replaced and operations up and running.
Hermon Mountain expressed thanks to the Hermon and Hampden Fire Departments for helping to drain the water pipes on the mountain and preventing more damage, in addition to putting out the fire.
Hermon Mountain Ski Area had not yet opened for the season.
