The brother of the slain officer says he prays for the man suspected of his murder. "I pray for him and he'll have to pay for what he did and justice will be served one way or another," said Cole.

Tom Cole, Cole’s younger brother says his family has lost their "rock, protector and hero."

Cole, known as Gene to his friends and family, left behind three sons, one daughter, six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. His oldest son David is also a Somerset County Sheriff’s Deputy. Father and son attended the Maine State Police Academy in 2004.

David Cole broke the news of his father’s death to his mother, Sheryl, and family members. Cole says his brother Gene became the rock of the family when their brothers and father passed away. Now Cole’s son David is taking on that role for the heartbroken family.
