Fire destroys South Bristol cottage

SOUTH BRISTOL, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — Wind off the water helped feed a fire in South Bristol this morning.

Just a short time after three guests had just left their vacation cottage at 163 Miles Rd, a neighbor noticed fire coming out of the windows and called for help.

Fire Chief Mark Corrothers says the wind wasn't the only challenge his crew had to face.

To get water, firefighters had to stretch their hoses a half mile up a dirt road to a pumping station. They also had to watch their step because of a nearby cliff.

One firefighter went to the hospital to be treated for dehydration.

The remaining crews worked for hours to bring the fire under control, but by then, Chief Corrothers says the house was a total loss.

It had been posted 'for sale' by its owner from out-of-state.
