Fire destroys four generations of family history in Machiasport

A fire destroyed a family home in Machiasport over the weekend, blazing through four generations of family history, heirlooms and memories.

MACHIASPORT (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- Imagine losing more than one hundred years of family history in the blink of an eye – that is the reality for one family in Machiasport that lost their home to a fire over the weekend.

The Hinerman family built the home on Port Rd back in the early 1900's. Since then, it has been passed down through the family. Melissa Hinerman moved into the home in 2012. When she got the call from her mother over the weekend about the fire she was in complete shock.

"She said Melissa, thank god you’re ok, your house is on fire," Hinerman said holding back tears. "I didn’t believe it."

The flames blazed through the home destroying almost everything in its path. Hinerman says beneath the rubble and charred walls lie years of memories.

"It’s so surreal, four generations of my family lived in this home," Hinerman said. "I had so many of grandmothers belongings, so many of my grandmothers antiques, her furniture…I feel like I failed her in a way."

Melissa’s father, Mike Hinerman, was one of the first people on scene the night of the fire. As the assistant fire chief he knew he had a job to do, but it wasn’t an easy one. However, knowing his daughter was safe was the most important thing.

"The sentimental and sheer terror when I saw it on fire, that was tough," Mike Hinerman said. "Like I said things are things, if you’re family is ok…you’re fine."

Since the fire support from the Downeast community has poured out. A Go-Fund me page has even been created. Hinerman can't thank her community enough for its generosity. She says luckily the home was properly insured, which will help with rebuilding.

Hinerman says everything helps, especially since the fire comes after her partner lost his job when Downeast Correctional facility was abruptly shut down in February.

Though she has been struck with tragedy, Melissa remains resilient, saying they will re-build -- seeing the beauty despite the sadness.

In addition to the Go-Fund me page, there will also be a spaghetti supper and Chinese-style auction held Sunday evening in East Machias. For more information, click here.
