Fire crews respond to 17-acre forest fire in Leeds

The fire was ruled accidental and was caused by a small campfire or a vehicle, according to the fire department.

LEEDS, Maine — Fire crews responded to a 17-acre forest fire in Leeds Tuesday evening.

The Leeds Volunteer Fire Department shared on social media that the fire was in the area of Plains Road and Kenney Road.

The fire was ruled accidental and was caused by a small campfire or a vehicle, according to the fire department. 

"We made quick work of what could have turned into a much larger issue," the fire department said Wednesday in an update.

In addition to members of the Leeds Fire Department, the Monmouth Fire Department said 22 of its members responded to the scene. Monmouth also posted photos of the fire to social media.

Drivers were advised to avoid the intersection of the two roads during the emergency response.

Dry conditions contributed to multiple other forest fires in Maine over the weekend, including a fire in Buckfield that took crews three days to extinguish.
