CARMEL, Maine — A home in Carmel was deemed a total loss following a fire Thursday afternoon.
Carmel Assistant Fire Chief Mike Azevedo told NEWS CENTER Maine multiple crews responded to a home located on a long, narrow dirt road at 180 Island Way in the area of Etna Pond.
Azevedo said crews took roughly an hour to extinguish the blaze, and are looking to clear remaining hot spots as of roughly 5:30 p.m. He added that the wind posed a large challenge to those beating back the blaze.
"The wind, it’s not bad now, but the wind was driving this to a point that you couldn’t see around us," Azevedo said. "You couldn’t see to fight it. And the first Hermon crew went in and did the best they could to knock it down."
Azevedo said that crews were grateful for the cold weather, because they might not have been able to reach the home if it were warmer.
"This is a dirt road. The good news is, as cold as it is, the dirt road is frozen, so we drove in. Had this been yesterday, probably couldn’t have gotten in here."
A NEWS CENTER Maine reporter at the scene saw Etna firefighters collecting water from the Soudabascook Stream while responding to the fire.
No one was home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported. The home was deemed a total loss.
Hermon, Levant, Newburg, and Etna crews reportedly provided mutual aide.
