Fire marshal's office investigates fatal fire in Sanford

Police said the remains of an adult male were found in a makeshift tent that was destroyed in the fire.

SANFORD, Maine — The state fire marshal's office is investigating after human remains were found inside a makeshift tent that was destroyed in a fire in Sanford on Saturday. 

The Sanford Fire Department responded to a fire located in a wooded area near 1 Eagle Dr. at approximately 10:30 a.m., according to a news release from Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss. 

Fire officials found the remains of an adult male inside a makeshift tent that was destroyed in the fire, Moss said. The fire marshal's office was reportedly called to the scene to investigate. 

An autopsy will be conducted by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner to identify the remains. Moss said the cause of the fire is still under investigation. 

The Sanford Police Department and Maine State Police assisted at the scene.

No further information was released.
