Fatal crash shuts down Forest Avenue

A Portland police spokesperson said it's "currently unclear whether there was a medical event prior to the fatality."

PORTLAND, Maine — Portland police and emergency crews responded to a two-car crash on Forest Avenue Tuesday afternoon. 

Officers arrived at the scene on 1808 Forest Ave. at 1:16 p.m. Witnesses reported seeing one of the vehicles driven by a 62-year-old man from Cape Elizabeth cross the center line and hit another car head-on, according to a release from Portland Police Department spokesperson Brad Nadeau.

MedCU attempted to resuscitate the driver from Cape Elizabeth, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld as police contact next of kin, the release stated.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 35-year-old man from South Portland, sustained broken bones from the crash and was transported to Maine Medical Center, with injuries not considered life-threatening. 

Following the accident, the road reopened at approximately 5:30 p.m.

No charges have been filed at this time.
