POLAND, Maine — The driver of an SUV has died after colliding with a tractor-trailer Tuesday morning.
Emergency officials with Poland Fire-Rescue and the Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a crash involving two vehicles on Route 26 shortly after 7 a.m. in the area of Nonesuch River Brewing, according to a release from the sheriff's department.
Initial investigation suggested that the SUV traveling north lost control, skidded, and crossed the centerline, causing it to collide head-on with a tractor-trailer, the release stated.
The driver of the SUV was apparently not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff's office said. Their identity has not yet been released, pending notification of family.
The tractor-trailer driver was not injured in the crash.
The crash is being reconstructed by the sheriff's office with aid from the Lewiston Police Department as well as the Maine State Police Commercial Enforcement Unit, which is "standard protocol in all fatal crashes involving a tractor-trailer unit," the release said.
The official cause of the crash remains under investigation.
