PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- After months of failed negotiations and the possibility of a strike, FairPoint employees picketed Tuesday morning. They said their goal is to educate the public about their fight for a fair contact.
Negotiations began in April for a contract that expired Aug. 2. When the contract expired, union representatives said their members would keep working and not go on strike. The unions can now call a strike or FairPoint can lock out workers without prior notice.
The unions and the company have agreed to meet on Wednesday and Thursday, August 13 and 14, to resume negotiations. At Tuesday's picket, the union said employees plan to educate customers about the company's proposal to replace union workers with low-skilled, out-of-state contractors.
