SIDNEY, Maine — An Ellsworth man was seriously injured in a box truck rollover crash Friday afternoon on Interstate 95 in Sidney.

Maine State Police were notified about a box truck driving "erratically" on I-95 northbound at about 3 p.m. Friday near mile 112, the Maine Department of Public Safety said in a news release.

"As troopers were moving to intercept the truck, multiple calls came in to report that the same truck had crashed into the median at mile 118 in Sidney," the release stated.

Troopers say they believe the driver, identified as 42-year-old Ashley Peters of Ellsworth, fell asleep at the wheel and left the roadway. The box truck, owned by Eastern Mold Remediation, entered the median and struck a tree as a result. The truck then rolled onto its passenger side.

State police said Peters was seriously injured, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening. He was not wearing a seatbelt when the crash happened.

Peters was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

I-95 was reduced to one lane on the northbound side while crews worked to clear the scene. It reopened fully to traffic shortly after 6 p.m.

No additional details were released.
