SKOWHEGAN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- For the first time in six years, downhill skiing and snowboarding trails might open at Eaton Mountain in Skowhegan. The owners hope to get state approvals in time to open by Dec. 26.
Owners would open the mountain in parts, starting with the lower part of the hill, which includes two new ski tows and novice and intermediate slopes. Snow-making guns were fired up earlier this month and the mountain has a light coating. By the end of the month, owner David Beers hopes to have a foot of snow in the ski and tubing areas.
The two lifts used for skiing and snowboarding still need to be inspected by a state mechanic, and if approved, Beers needs to file a permit with the state to operate the lift. He hopes to have this done by next week.
