Good Samaritan rescues man from Sebago Lake

Earlier Saturday, hundreds were on Sebago Lake for the annual Ice Fishing Derby. Some areas have 16 inches of ice, but others did not have the two inches wardens recommend for people to stand on safely.

CASCO (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- A Good Samaritan rescued a man who fell into Sebago Lake Saturday evening using extension cords as a makeshift rope.

Mark Tomasino, of Leicester, Ma., owns a home on Sebago Lake, and said he heard the man screaming for help.

"I heard the scream of 'help me! Help! Help!' and it was a scream real loud," said Tomasino. "It was just the perfect storm like I said, thank God no one else went through. He was just lucky we were there I guess because it could have been a lot worse."

Tomasino said he called 911 and grabbed multiple 100-foot long extension cords and tied them together and tossed them out to the man in the water and then pulled him in. He said the man was about 75 feet offshore. He said the man had two or three friends nearby and that they had been ice fishing together earlier in the day.

"The ice was so thin," said Tomasino.

He brought the man inside his home and warmed him with a "Torpedo" heater, he said. He believes the man is from Kennebunk, and said he appeared to be 25 or 26 years old.

"I think anyone would have did the same thing," said Tomasino.

Tomasino said he has vacationed in the area for 15 to 20 years.

Crews from Casco report that they rescued multiple people from the water on Sebago Lake Saturday evening.

First responders in the area said they safely rescued multiple people, but did not say how they got in the water. Cumberland County dispatchers confirmed that they called for a water rescue and that everyone is out and no one got transported to the hospital.
