State police investigating death of Buxton man at York County Jail

William Austin, 40, of Buxton was reportedly found unresponsive in his cell at about 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday, deputies said.

ALFRED, Maine — The death of a man who was being held at the York County Jail is being investigated.

William Austin, 40, of Buxton was reportedly found unresponsive in his cell at about 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday, the York County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Austin was arrested on Monday and taken to the jail at about 6 p.m. that day, according to the release.

Medical personnel at the jail, as well as rescue units from Alfred and Sanford, administered aid to Austin but were not successful, the release stated.

Deputies say Austin's cause of death is unknown at this time.

The sheriff's office did not say why Austin was being held at the jail.

The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit is investigating his death.
